Bridging Centuries: 17th-Century Wooden Busts Enter the Digital Dimension

20 Feb, 2026 | Return|

We are proud to announce the digital debut of two exquisite 17th-century wooden busts from the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia. These hand-carved masterpieces, created by unknown artists of the Baroque era, represent the pinnacle of period craftsmanship and are now accessible to a global audience through high-fidelity 3D modeling

The collection features two youthful male figures, identified as the Young Saint and the Young Pilgrim Saint. Both sculptures are characterized by their short, curly hair and traditional brown garments, complete with intricate collars and subtle decorative flourishes.

The delicate preservation of their features—most notably the faint, original pigment on their cheeks and lips—offers a rare glimpse into the aesthetic sensibilities of the 16th century. By transitioning these works into the digital realm, we ensure that these fragile details are documented for posterity and professional study.

Innovation in Documentation: From Artec Leo to iPhone 15

To showcase the versatility of modern preservation, our team utilized two distinct yet powerful digital capture methods:

  • The Young Saint: Captured using the Artec Leo, a professional-grade wireless 3D scanner, ensuring sub-millimeter structural accuracy.

  • The Young Pilgrim Saint: Recorded using the camera of the iPhone 15, demonstrating the growing capabilities of mobile photogrammetry in cultural heritage.

Both models were processed within Artec Studio to create seamless, high-resolution digital twins.

We invite you to engage with these historical treasures beyond the confines of a traditional display case.
