Preserving the Baroque: Digitizing the Masterpieces of Francesco Robba

20 Mar, 2026 | Return|

"We are thrilled to share a look into our recent work involving the high-resolution 3D documentation of two significant marble sculptures by the renowned Baroque master Francesco Robba (1698–1757)."

A Journey Through History and Restoration

Both the statues of Saint Andrew the Apostle and Saint Francis de Sales carry a storied history. Originally crafted for the altar of St. Catherine in the Zagreb Cathedral, these marble works were moved to the parish church in Sisak in 1885.

Tragically, both sculptures sustained damage during the devastating 2020 earthquake. Following the event, they were moved to the Croatian Conservation Institute (Hrvatski restauratorski zavod) in Zagreb. We are pleased to report that conservation and restoration works on these masterpieces have now been successfully completed.

Bridging Art and Technology

To ensure these works are preserved in the digital realm with absolute precision, our team utilized the Artec 3D Leo scanner. This technology allows us to capture the intricate folds of the marble drapery and the delicate expressions characteristic of Robba’s style in stunning detail.

The resulting 3D models serve as a "digital twin," providing an invaluable record for future research, education, and further conservation efforts.

With Sincere Gratitude

A project of this scale is only possible through collaboration. We would like to extend our deepest thanks to the staff at the Croatian Conservation Institute for their incredible expertise and support. Our gratitude also goes to the Conservation Institute in Sisak and Diocese of Sisak.
