Field Work Update: 3D Scanning in Klagenfurt

03 Oct, 2025 | Return|

We’re excited to share another milestone from the RCtoDC (From Raw Collection to Digital Collection) project. Our team traveled to Klagenfurt to conduct a new round of field work, focusing on the 3D digitization of important Baroque sculptures by Francesco Robba.

Using advanced 3D scanning technology, we carefully documented four of Robba’s works: Saint Sebastian, Saint Leopold (?), Saint Roch, and Saint John of Nepomuk. These sculptures were originally part of the public monument of St John of Nepomuk (c. 1737), which once stood at the main square in Klagenfurt. The monument was removed in 1874, and from the original seven sculptures, only four remain. Today, they are preserved at the Klagenfurt Cathedral.

Each of these works was scanned in detail, capturing not only their artistic refinement but also their historical and cultural significance. These high-resolution digital models will serve as valuable resources for future research, conservation, and education.

This effort represents a key step in our broader mission to preserve and share Austria's cultural heritage in digital form. By transforming physical artworks into detailed digital records, we contribute to long-term preservation while also opening new possibilities for accessibility and interdisciplinary study.

We would like to express our gratitude to our hosts at Klagenfurt Cathedral for their support and collaboration. Their openness and commitment to cultural heritage preservation were instrumental in making this stage of the project a success.

As the RCtoDC project continues to move forward, we look forward to sharing more updates and insights from our fieldwork. Thank you for following our journey to digitize and protect cultural heritage — stay tuned for more.
