Baroque Sculptures by Joseph Holzinger

11 Feb, 2026 | Return|

We’re pleased to present newly created 3D models of two exceptional Baroque wooden sculptures by Joseph Holzinger (1735–1797), offering a closer look at the artist’s theatrical sensitivity and intricate carving technique.

Artistry in 3D
These sculptures of Mary Magdalene (1756–1760) and St. Paul (c. 1763) have been part of the National Gallery of Slovenia collection since 1933. They exemplify the late Baroque style through their elegant contrapposto, expressive gazes, and flowing gilded garments.

The newly produced 3D models allow viewers to explore these masterpieces beyond the constraints of the exhibition space. By interacting with the models, you can reveal subtle details of the carving—such as the skull held by Mary Magdalene or the delicate drapery of St. Paul—and observe surface treatments that are often difficult to see from a distance in a gallery setting.
