Bringing Baroque to Life: Exploring Our New 3D Sculptural Models

13 Mar, 2026 | Return|

We are thrilled to announce the digital debut of three Baroque masterpieces from the National Gallery of Slovenia. Through advanced 3D scanning and photogrammetry, these historic artefacts have been transformed into high-fidelity digital models, allowing you to explore the intricate craftsmanship of the 17th and 18th centuries from any angle—and even in your own space via Augmented Reality (AR).

Featured Sculptures

Home Altar of the Annunciation of Mary

Unknown Author, 17th Century. This polychrome wooden altar is full of architectural detail. From the lace-like carved crown of the attic to the high-relief scene of the Annunciation, the model captures every delicate element. Look closely at the antependium to see the relief of St. Margaret and St. Barbara, or zoom in on the attic to see God the Father resting His hand upon a globe.

St. John the Baptist (NG P 844)

Unknown Author, 3rd Quarter of the 18th Century. The digital model highlights the hand-carved textures and the fluid form of the figure, preserving the legacy of an anonymous master.

The Immaculate Conception (NG P 843)

Mihael Pogačnik, Early 18th Century. This gold-leafed wooden sculpture depicts Mary in flowing drapery. The 3D model allows you to appreciate Pogačnik’s mastery—from her prayerful gesture to the symbolic sphere beneath her feet, where she stands triumphantly over a coiled snake.

The Science Behind the Art

To ensure these models are as historically accurate as they are visually stunning, we utilized a hybrid approach of cutting-edge hardware:

  • Precision Scanning: All three models were captured using the Artec 3D Space Spider II. This industrial-grade scanner is designed specifically for complex geometry and fine detail, making it perfect for the deep crevices and ornate "lace" carvings of Baroque wood.

  • High-Resolution Photogrammetry: For St. John the Baptist and The Immaculate Conception, we integrated data from the Canon EOS R5 Mark II. By combining 45-megapixel imagery with 3D scan data, we achieved lifelike textures and realistic light interaction on the gilded and painted surfaces.

  • Augmented Reality: For a truly immersive experience, the models of St. John and the Immaculate Conception are AR-ready. This means you can "place" these sculptures in your room using your smartphone to understand their true scale and presence.
